The ASQ offers a lot of certifications in the area of Quality. You can become certified to be a Quality Manager, a Calibration Technician, a Six Sigma Black Belt or a host of other alternatives.  These certifications offer up a chance to validate your knowledge on the topic and provide recognition to others that you know your stuff. Thanks to the work that ASQ has put into the development of these certifications, these certifications are recognized as professional certifications around the globe. 

If you are like me, when you go to take any of the ASQ Certification tests, you are focused on preparing for that test so that you can obtain that certification.  You may not sit and wonder how the test was developed. Who is the person that knows all of this information to create the test?!

Thanks to an opportunity I had last year to assist in the development of a certification test, I will shed some light on the process the ASQ uses to develop its certifications.  Much like it takes a lot of steps for a bill to become a law, there is an involved process for each and every question must take to make it to a certification test.

Adam Caldwell is a CSSBB through ASQ who over the past 17 years, has spent time in the manufacturing worlds of nutritional supplements and tire manufacturing learning and utilizing his skill set in Lean manufacturing and project management.  He currently works with Michelin NA as a Project Manager of new tire line projects.
